Local SEO: search engine optimisation for your cityGet found –where it counts.
Local SEO means optimising your website and your Google Business Profile for searches with a location, such as “estate agent Cologne” or “bathroom renovation Hamburg”. The goal is to appear in Google Maps and the local results ahead of your competitors whenever people in your area look for what you offer. It works in every city where you want to win customers.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO (local search engine optimisation) makes sure your business shows up for searches with a location – in Google Maps, in the map pack at the top of the results and in the regular results below it.
People don’t search in the abstract, they search specifically. They don’t type “estate agent”, they type “estate agent Cologne”, “translation agency Berlin” or “bathroom fitter near me”. Google picks up on the location and favours providers from that area.
For local searches, Google usually shows two areas:
- The map pack (local pack): a map with typically three businesses, their reviews, opening hours and contact details. This information comes from the Google Business Profile.
- The organic results: the classic listings below. Here, websites rank that have a dedicated page for “service + city”.
Good local SEO gets you into both. And increasingly into AI answers too: ask ChatGPT or Google for “a good tax adviser in Leipzig” and you’ll get businesses that are clearly identifiable as local.
One thing worth knowing if you’re targeting German-speaking markets: your customers search in German. The pattern stays the same – “Immobilienmakler Köln” rather than “estate agent Cologne” – so your city pages need German keyword research, not translated English terms.
Why is local visibility so valuable?
If you’re visible for specific local searches, you get the most qualified enquiries.
Highly qualified enquiries
Someone searching “estate agent Hamburg” wants to buy or sell now. No wasted reach, just real prospects from your area. Many businesses don’t need hundreds of enquiries a month, either. A handful of the right ones is often enough to make a noticeable difference to revenue.
Trust through proximity
People trust local providers more – even if the work later happens remotely. Local visibility builds trust before the first conversation has even taken place.
Scales to any city
Hamburg, Berlin, Munich or Zurich: with the right setup you get found in every city where you operate. That makes local SEO relevant not just for the bakery round the corner, but also for service businesses that work nationwide and want customers in several cities.
How does Google decide who ranks locally?
Google itself names three factors for local results (tips to improve your local ranking):
| Factor | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well does your listing match the search? | the right categories, a complete service description, a matching city page |
| Distance | How far are you from the searcher or the location in the search? | a correct address or service area, separate pages for other cities |
| Prominence | How well known and trusted is your business? | reviews, local links, mentions, a strong website |
You can barely influence distance. Relevance and prominence, on the other hand, are very much in your hands – and that’s where local SEO comes in.
How does the “service + city” principle work?
The pattern never changes: your service combined with the city where your customers are. Each combination gets its own fully optimised page that convinces Google and customers at the same time.
- Define the service: what do you offer, and for which industry? That’s the foundation of every page.
- Choose target cities: Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Zurich – together we decide where your customers are.
- Build the pages: every service-and-city combination gets an optimised page, such as “service Hamburg” or “service Berlin”.
- Gain visibility: Google recognises you as the local expert for exactly the searches your customers use.
Here’s what that looks like across industries (shown with the German searches your customers would actually type):
| Industry | Main search | More local searches |
|---|---|---|
| Real estate | Immobilienmakler Hamburg | Immobilienmakler Altona, Immobilienmakler Eimsbüttel, Immobilienmakler Blankenese |
| Recruitment | Headhunting Berlin | Headhunter München, Headhunter Frankfurt, Headhunter Hamburg |
| Trades | Sanierung Hamburg | Badsanierung Hamburg, Fassadensanierung Hamburg, Sanierung Altona |
| Languages | Dolmetscher Zürich | Übersetzer Zürich, Dolmetscher Basel, Sprachservice Bern |
| Marketing | SEO Hamburg | SEO Experte Hamburg, SEO München, SEO Zürich |
One important point: a city page needs genuinely local content. Google calls pages where only the place name changes doorway pages and demotes them. Good city pages show local projects, contacts, directions, questions typical for the region or specifics of the local market.
How do you turn your Google Business Profile into a source of enquiries?
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the listing that appears in Google Maps and the map pack. For many local searches it now matters more than your own website. We turn it into more than a digital business card:

- Profile optimisation: the right primary and secondary categories, complete service descriptions, opening hours, real photos and regular posts.
- Review strategy: a fixed, ideally automated routine that asks happy customers for honest feedback at the right moment.
- Response management: every review gets a reply – including the critical ones. Future customers pay close attention to how you handle criticism.
How does your website turn local searches into real enquiries?
Many searches are very specific: a service plus a place. If your website is built for exactly that, your chances of the right enquiries rise significantly.

- Location landing pages: separate pages for each city or district that answer the needs and questions of local customers.
- Consistent contact details (NAP): NAP stands for name, address and phone number. They must match exactly on your website, your Business Profile and in business directories so Google can attribute them clearly.
- Local signals on the page: the location in the title, headings and copy, an embedded map, and structured data with your address and service area.
- Mobile first: local searches often happen on the go, on a phone. Your phone number and directions must be one tap away.
Why do so many local businesses get few enquiries despite having a website?
Many local businesses have a website, but nobody checks whether it’s actually visible on Google. The profile is only updated now and then, and Google doesn’t recognise the site as locally relevant. The result: competitors get the enquiries from right on your doorstep, even though your offer is good.
We end the guesswork and make your local presence measurable:

- Monitoring: we track your local rankings, calls, direction requests and website clicks from your profile.
- Competitor analysis: we look at why local competitors outrank you – and what you can do better.
- Local links: links from regional directories, associations, partners, sponsorships or local media strengthen your prominence in the area.
How do I use local SEO myself?
I don’t just explain local SEO, I use it. Since 2013 my German page has ranked on page 1 of Google for “SEO-Experte Hamburg”, often in first place. That visibility is exactly why new enquiries keep coming in – without advertising and without cold outreach.

This is how you find me on Google Maps – exactly the kind of listing I build for my clients:

Questions about local SEO
Updated on · by Hamed Farhadian
Do I need a separate page for every city?
For every city where you seriously want customers, yes. What matters is that each page has genuinely local content – contacts, projects, directions or local specifics. Pages where only the city name changes are treated by Google as doorway pages and lose out.
Does local SEO work without a shopfront?
Yes. If you visit customers – as a tradesperson or consultant, for example – you set a service area in your Google Business Profile and hide your address. For additional cities you mainly work with city pages on your website.
How long does local SEO take to work?
A properly set-up Business Profile and your first reviews often make a difference within a few weeks. City pages and local links usually take a few months to rank consistently. Nobody can honestly promise a fixed position by a fixed date.
Can I buy or reward reviews?
No. Fake or paid reviews break Google’s policies and, in Germany, also carry legal risk under competition law. A better approach is a fixed routine that asks happy customers for honest feedback at the right moment.
What does local SEO cost?
It depends on how many cities and services you want to cover and how strong local competition is. After a short conversation you get a clear proposal. You can see what can be included in the overview of my SEO solutions.
