# Fast WordPress hosting – More speed – less maintenance.

Fast WordPress hosting is hosting where the servers, caching and software are tuned for WordPress, so your pages load without a wait. The easiest way to get it is managed WordPress hosting: the provider handles updates, backups and security for you. I have recommended the German host HostPress since 2018 – and I’ll be upfront that HostPress is also a client of mine.

## Why does hosting speed matter so much for WordPress?

Because visitors don’t wait. If a page takes too long, they hit the back button and click the next result – often your competitor’s.

You know the feeling: a page loads slowly, you get impatient and you’re gone. For you as a visitor that’s annoying. For the site owner it’s expensive, because all they see is traffic and enquiries drying up – usually without knowing why.

A slow server holds you back in three places:

- **Visitors:** People who have to wait leave. Every second of load time costs enquiries and orders.
- **Google:** Load time feeds into rankings through the Core Web Vitals – three Google metrics for loading (LCP), responsiveness (INP) and visual stability (CLS).
- **Traffic peaks:** When many people arrive at once, say after a newsletter or a campaign, a weak server buckles – exactly when it matters most.

One metric depends almost entirely on your host: **Time to First Byte (TTFB)**, the time it takes the server to send the first byte of your page. If it’s high, no plugin in the world will make the page truly fast.

## What is managed WordPress hosting?

Managed WordPress hosting is hosting built specifically for WordPress, where the provider takes care of the technical upkeep. You look after your content; the host looks after servers, updates, security and backups.

To speed things up, your site first moves onto the provider’s WordPress-optimised servers. Many hosts handle that migration for you.

| | Basic shared hosting | Managed WordPress hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Server | shared with many sites, generic setup | tuned for WordPress |
| Updates for WordPress, plugins, themes | your job | handled or monitored by the host |
| Backups | often optional or manual | automatic, one-click restore |
| Security | basic protection | WordPress-specific monitoring |
| Support | general hosting support | support that knows WordPress |
| Your effort | high | low |

## How do you recognise fast WordPress hosting?

Run every provider through this checklist – including the one I recommend below:

1. **Fast storage:** SSD or NVMe drives instead of spinning disks.
2. **A current PHP version:** PHP is the language WordPress runs on. Look for PHP 8.3 or newer, which WordPress recommends as of October 2026. Older versions no longer get security fixes.
3. **Modern protocols:** HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 load many files in parallel over a single connection.
4. **Server-side caching:** A page cache serves ready-made pages instead of rebuilding them on every request. An object cache such as Redis speeds up database queries.
5. **Server location:** Data centres close to your audience mean shorter round trips. For customers in Germany, a German or EU location also makes GDPR compliance simpler.
6. **Automatic backups:** daily, several days deep, with one-click restore.
7. **Staging:** a test copy of your site where you try updates before they go live.
8. **Support that knows WordPress:** reachable when things break, and able to tell a plugin problem from a server problem.

## What does a managed WordPress host take off your plate?

Most site owners have neither the time nor the IT skills for ongoing maintenance. That’s exactly what a managed host covers:

- **Updates:** WordPress, plugins and themes stay current, which closes security holes and keeps extensions working.
- **Security:** The provider monitors its servers and responds to attacks.
- **Backups:** Plenty of people put off backups – until a hack takes the site down. Without a backup you’re left picking up the pieces and deciding whether to rebuild from scratch. With automatic backups you simply restore yesterday’s version.
- **Help and know-how:** Good support helps when something breaks, and some hosts run webinars on what matters when running your site.

All that’s left for you is your content. In an online shop you’ll notice it in revenue; on a content site, in page views.

## Why do I recommend HostPress?

Transparency first: HostPress is a client of mine – I have supported the company with SEO. I also use HostPress as a hosting partner for WordPress projects. I don’t receive a commission for recommending them. I first recommended them in 2018 and I still stand by it, but make up your own mind.

[HostPress](https://www.hostpress.de/) is a German provider of managed WordPress hosting. It’s the right fit if your audience is in Germany or the EU. What convinced me:

- **WordPress only:** servers and support are built around WordPress.
- **Migration and upkeep:** HostPress moves your site to its servers and keeps WordPress, plugins and themes up to date.
- **Backups included:** backups run automatically and can be restored with one click.
- **People to talk to:** support helps with urgent problems, and the team shares know-how on running a WordPress site in webinars.

Plans and prices have changed several times since 2018, so check them directly with HostPress and compare them against the checklist above.

How I helped HostPress itself with SEO is covered in the case study.

## Is fast hosting enough for a fast WordPress site?

No. Hosting is the foundation, but plenty of WordPress sites are slow despite good servers. The usual culprits:

- heavy themes and page builders that load a lot of code
- too many plugins, each bringing its own scripts
- large, uncompressed images
- third-party scripts such as chat widgets, tracking and externally hosted fonts

How to find these bottlenecks is covered in my guide [Speed up WordPress](https://www.hamed.de/en/slow-wordpress-website/). The numbers come from [Google PageSpeed Insights](https://www.hamed.de/en/improve-google-pagespeed-insights/).

## How do you move to faster WordPress hosting?

1. **Measure:** Test your site with PageSpeed Insights and note the results, especially Time to First Byte.
2. **Vet providers:** Work through the checklist above and ask whether migration is included.
3. **Migrate:** Let the host move the site or use a migration plugin.
4. **Test:** Check the site on the new server before pointing your domain at it: forms, shop, redirects.
5. **Switch:** Point the domain to the new server, ideally at a quiet time.
6. **Compare:** Measure again after a few days and keep an eye on Search Console.

## Questions about fast WordPress hosting

### Does faster hosting improve my Google rankings?

Indirectly, yes. Load time feeds into Google’s page experience signals through the Core Web Vitals, and fast pages keep visitors around. A fast server on its own won’t lift you to the top, though: content, technical setup and structure have to be right as well.

### Is managed WordPress hosting worth it for a small site?

Often, yes – especially if you lack the time or know-how for updates and backups. Don’t just compare the monthly fee; factor in what downtime, a hacked site or an hour of maintenance would cost you.

### How much does fast WordPress hosting cost?

Managed WordPress hosting usually costs more than basic shared hosting because maintenance and support are included. Plans change regularly, so check current prices with each provider and compare what is actually included.

### Will I lose rankings if I switch hosts?

Not if every URL stays the same and the site is just as accessible after the move. Test the site before switching, pick a quiet time for the change and check Google Search Console for errors afterwards.

### Do I still need a caching plugin?

It depends on the host. Many managed hosts already cache on the server, and an extra plugin can even get in the way. Ask support what they recommend before installing one yourself.
